Half-Day vs. Full-Day White Salmon Rafting: Which Trip Is Right for You?

Trying to decide between a half-day and a full-day White Salmon River rafting trip? Both run the same world-class whitewater and the same optional plunge over Husum Falls. The difference comes down to how much time you have, how much scenery you want, and whether a catered lunch and a longer day on the water sound like the perfect adventure.

Here’s a clear, side-by-side breakdown to help you choose.

What’s the Difference Between Half-Day and Full-Day White Salmon Rafting?

The main difference is length and scenery. The half-day White Salmon trip covers 7.5 miles of continuous Class III-IV whitewater in about 3.5 hours, including optional Husum Falls. The full-day trip adds a catered lunch and an extra 4.5 miles through the scenic Lower Gorge, for a 12-mile day. Both run the same big rapids.

Half-Day White Salmon Rafting: Overview

The half-day White Salmon trip is our most popular adventure: 7.5 miles of nearly nonstop Class III-IV rapids in about 3.5 hours for $90 per person. You’ll paddle a canyon of blue-green glacial water past caves and hanging gardens, with the option to run Husum Falls at the halfway point. It’s the most thrill-packed way to spend a morning or afternoon.

The half-day trip is best for you if you:

  • Want maximum whitewater in a compact time window
  • Are bringing kids (ages 6 and up are welcome)
  • Have a half day to spare rather than a full one
  • Are a first-time rafter looking for an exciting introduction
  • Want the most budget-friendly option

Full-Day White Salmon Rafting: Overview

The full-day rafting trip is an extended version of the half-day. You’ll run the same Class III-IV whitewater and optional Husum Falls in the morning, enjoy a catered lunch at Northwestern Park, then continue an extra 4.5 miles through the Lower Gorge. This 12-mile journey passes the former Condit Dam site and the dramatic White Salmon Narrows, ending with views of Mt. Hood.

The full-day trip is best for you if you:

  • Want the complete White Salmon experience, top to bottom
  • Love scenery, geology, and river history (the Condit Dam was removed in 2011–12)
  • Want a relaxed catered lunch built into your day
  • Are comfortable hiking over uneven terrain and scrambling up a short rock wall at the Steelhead Falls portage
  • Want a fuller day on the water, not just the rapids

Do Both Trips Include Husum Falls?

Yes. Both the half-day and full-day trips reach Husum Falls at the halfway point of the Middle White Salmon, and on both trips the falls is completely optional. Husum Falls is the tallest commercially rafted waterfall in the U.S., and whether it runs depends on water levels and your guide’s judgment. Guests who’d rather skip it can walk around and cheer from shore. Learn more in our Husum Falls rafting guide.

Which Trip Is Better for Families and First-Timers?

For most families and first-time rafters, the half-day trip is the better fit. It welcomes kids ages 6 and up, delivers all the signature White Salmon whitewater, and wraps up in about 3.5 hours, an ideal length for younger paddlers and packed schedules. The full-day trip suits older kids and adults who want more time on the water and can handle the short portage hike.

Which White Salmon Rafting Trip Should You Choose?

Use this quick guide to decide:

  • Choose the half-day if you want the most whitewater in the least time, you’re bringing younger kids, you’re new to rafting, or you want the most affordable trip.
  • Choose the full-day if you want the complete river from top to bottom, you love scenery and history, you’d enjoy a catered lunch on the water, and you’re comfortable with a short portage hike.

Either way, you get the same heart-pounding rapids and the same optional Husum Falls. The full day simply adds more river, more scenery, and a longer day of memories.

Things to Know Before You Book

  • Both trips run the same whitewater (Class III-IV) and the same optional Husum Falls.
  • During peak season (July and August), we only offer the Full-Day White Salmon trip on weekdays
  • The full-day adds 4.5 miles of scenic Lower Gorge plus a catered lunch.
  • Husum Falls is always optional and only runs at safe water levels.
  • The half-day is the most popular and most family-friendly choice.
  • The full-day’s Lower Gorge can close during low-water conditions, so call ahead later in the season.
  • Both trips launch from BZ Corner, WA, about an hour east of Portland and minutes from Hood River.
  • All gear is provided: wetsuit, neoprene booties, Type V PFD, helmet, and splash top. See what to wear whitewater rafting.
  • Ages 6 and up are welcome; the full-day requires the ability to hike and scramble at the Steelhead Falls portage.
